“Having now taken this tent out several times, and in plenty of rain, I’m very happy with the performance. The fly has good coverage and good seam-taping and I’ve never had a wetness problem other than some small amounts of condensation on cold mornings. I’ve used this in seasonable weather, from low 50’s to high 30’s and it’s performed well. The ventilation is decent even with the fly on and without much wind. It’s not easy to stargaze, but you can get a view if you position your head at the door. One great feature is the fly vent, which pops up and stays open thanks to a little hoop of wire in it. Hopefully it will not get mangled over time. The floor is a little thin (cut yourself a tarp groundcover) and I think abrasion could definitely be a problem. Those with dogs might want to be take extra care tht Fido’s nails don’t rip right through the floor. Condensation was slight overnight and only at the foot of the tent, not bad for the humidity in WI. Also the mesh kept the bugs out, which was very important.

It’s not the hugest–things would be tight with a second person, and taller folks might feel cramped in the length dept. However, the design does allow the tent to have a small footprint and yet seem ok for two people even if not super comfy. A good compromise for me, a camper who was wavering between 1 and 2 person tents. The vestibule isn’t big, but it’s better than many tents at a similar price point. There’s a loop in the ceiling for hanging gear, and a couple of gear pockets at the front of the tent. Aluminum poles are good, although I was not expecting them to be shock-corded.

Probably bulky and a tad heavy for serious backpackers. Easy (EASY!) to setup and take down, though I agree with another review that I’m in the dark on the guywire operation. I didn’t need ‘em anyway, though the shape of the tent (basically rectangular) leads me to think that high winds could be a problem. Stakes are ok, but surely will get replaced sooner or later.

With aluminum poles, a good fly, some vestibule space, good amounts of mesh, sealed seams, some gear pockets, and an ok brand name, this is a good tent for the money. Similar models at this price point tend to skimp on at least one of these features. If you want to spend less than 130 for a freestanding tent, this is a very good option.”

“I’ve had this tent for a few months. It’s light weight and compact. When put up, is very sturdy and sound. The tent goes up fast, simple and easy; take down is just as nice. It withstood rain with no problem. I’m 6′3 and have no problems with room while lying down. I haven’t had it very long but seems that it will last a long time. It can fit two people easily but not much room for gear inside with two. The only negative is that the vestibule is nice but not enough room for a lot of gear. Otherwise, excellent tent for a low price.”

“Many Boy Scout troops use this tent. It is easy to set up and can withstand the weather. There are no flexing poles to break. It is also one of the few tents for which replacement parts are readily available. It is just light enough for backpacking. Overall it is a very solid tent and you can’t go wrong buying it. Only downsides are a lack of vestibles (though they can be purchased separately) and the A fram shape does not give a lot of head room.”

“I have been using a two-man Timberline tent for decades. It’s easy to set up, keeps me dry when seam-sealed and stands up to wind quite well. It can be set up without any stakes but you would want to have at least four to hold the rain fly away from the tent. In dry climates, I use it without the fly. It claims to be a two-man tent, and we did sleep three in it on one time on a backpacking trip in the rain, but it’s best for one person. My first Timberline has been all over the United States and I bought a second one after the waterproofing in the floor gave way some 20 years later. As with most tents, you want to use it with a ground cloth in damp climates. Otherwise some moisture might seep in but my biggest issue is with all the dirt, decayed matter, used bubble gum from a previous camper, and so forth that sticks to the bottom. I bought this third one for my son to use on a bicycle trip. For the money, I think it’s one of the best tents out there.”

Wenzel Nova Sport 6- by 5-Foot Two-Person Dome Tent

Nicely lightweight and easy to set up and breakdown, the sporty Wenzel Nova dome-style tent is a great choice for a weekend car camping outing. It features a single room that measures 6 by 5 feet, and a 38-inch maximum height. It has a half-circle door with a mesh window covering half of it (and an interior zippered closure) as well as a three-quarter vented dome with no-see-um mesh. The interior is quite spare, with only a small gear pocket in one corner near the door.

Set up was easy, for the most part, and we erected the tent (with its two shock-corded fiberglass poles) in under five minutes. The one impediment to an even faster assembly was the heavy-duty nylon corner pockets that secure the poles, which included a polyester-reinforced interior flap that’s not seamed at the top of the entry. Thus, we had a tougher time than we should have trying to make correct purchase with the pocket, continually hitting the space between the nylon pocket and the interior poly pocket.

But we could forgive this slight design flaw for such a nicely light and easily backpacked tent. However, it should be noted that this tent isn’t suited to an all-out assault by rain, with just a small rain cover (instead of a full fly) to protect the dome’s three-quarter-ventilated square, which is quickly attached using integrated plastic hooks. That said, the water-resistant polyester exterior (polyester utilizing Wenzel’s Weather Armor coating) will shed drizzle and light rain (tested under our extended sprinkler test in our backyard) and keep you warm and protected inside. It also features a heavy-duty nylon floor with taped seams.

If you’re an occasional camper who sticks with fair-weather weekends, the Wenzel Nova is a fine, affordable choice for camping duos. –Agen G.N. Schmitz

“This guy is awesome. I got it for a church camping trip. My wife and I decided to go at the last moment, so 3 days before I was looking for a cheap tent online, and stumbled on this guy. Its a very small tent, and I dont recomend it for anyone taller than 5′8. (I am 5′8 and my wife is 4′11) I had just enough room to stretch. The package also says it fits a third person, and it does, but I wouldnt recomend it.

Setting up was simple. It took me 10 minutes to put it all together, and thats because we were late and setting up in the dark. Taking it apart was just as easy.

The only drawbacks are the zippers. They get caught on the fabric very easily. And since it is so small, you can feel the condensation on the walls, and if you bump your head on the wall, its going to rain in your tent. (Im exagerating it’s not that bad)

The most awesome part was storage. It fits anywhere. the pouch where it goes in is about a foot and 4 inches.

In my opinion, this tent was awesome. It did it’s job (provide shelter from the 30 degree weather outside); It didnt rip, And it was only 20 bucks!”

“I slept in this tent for several days up in the Appalachian Mountains. It was very comfortable and I had no problems with staying dry either from condensation in the morning or from the one day it rained. It was easy to put together, has nice ventilation options and convenient storage pockets etc. I slept in it by myself and had plenty of room. I think it would be a little crowded with two people, but since there are two doors it would definitely be possible. You wouldn’t have to crawl over you camping buddy to get out and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.”

“I picked this up for my 10 year old son as his first tent. We took it on a scout camp out this weekend and got to try it out. This tent was easy enough to put up in the rain, though due to the design, the poles require some effort to put through the sleeves. The fly went on in a heartbeat. I was surprised it has taped seams instead of a bathtub floor, but I put a tarp under it and even though we pitched it on wet muddy ground and had some light rain we stayed very dry. The temperature dropped unexpectedly overnight, and I was nicely surprised by how much warmer it was in the tent than outdoors when I opened up the tent to go. “I just returned from a 6-day/5-night camping trip and this is the tent I used. I did quite a bit of research before making my purchase and these were the requirements of what I was looking for in a tent:

1.) reasonably priced
2.) well made (duh–but you know what I’m talking about…something that doesn’t rival one of those CHEAP 30-dollar wannabe-tents from Target and other places)
3.) easily assembled by one person–and quickly
4.) small and light
5.) could manage under high winds and torrential downpours.

Well, after whittling down my list of possible tents, this is the one that remained. Here’s why I’m happy with my choice:

-At $100 (understandably, a steep price for some), for those that know that a cheap tent is nearly as bad as no tent at all, this was definitely a price that was reasonable.

-Many seams on the tent and rainfly had a pretty nice factory seal and the stitching seems tight and strong. The tent has excellent ventilation with much of the tent comprised of the fine, breathable mesh allowing air to easily come in and out.

-Excellent design for one man assembly. There are no annoying sleeves to slide the two press-fit poles through; they simply and sturdily attach to clips lining down to the four corners of the tent. I was able to set everything up within 5 minutes.

-While this can be used for two people, it would be cramped (31-sqft). It is perfect for one person and the extra gear (The previous reviewer’s comment on the paltry vestibule was spot-on). The tent barely weighs over 4 lbs. which is outstanding!! In fact, on my final day right before tear-down, when I picked up the entire assembled tent to carry to another spot so it could dry in the sunlight, I was amazed at how virtually weightless it seemed to be.

-Two of the days and nights were clear with lots of sun of stars. The others were filled with a windy lightning storm–a slow, long and perpetually annoying drizzle–and a few unrelenting downpours. The tent held up extremely well allowing only a small amount of water in at the corners…which was entirely my fault (See below).

I’m very pleased with this purchase. For the purposes of my trip, viz., solo, weeklong camping–where weight, quality, and price were the major concerns–if there is a better tent out there, its existence must have snuck past me. I’m planning an anniversary backpacking trip for next spring for me and the wife, so a new tent will be necessary (for which price will become less of a factor and where ultimate quality will be of paramount importance); however, for everything else involving just me, this will definitely be my tent of choice.

A few suggestions if purchasing the Teton 2. I would strongly advise purchasing the special Kelty Teton 2 footprint along with the tent. While $30 may seem like a very expensive accessory (maybe this is why the previous reviewer opted not to purchase it), it was a tremendous improvement on other materials I’ve used in the past under previous tents. It will protect your tent floor against minor damage as well as keeping it dry–and because it is specially made for this tent, it is extremely light (easily packs with the rest of the tent) and you never see it when the tent is set up (as opposed to using annoying and heavy tarps). Finally, a word on seam sealing. While all of the seams on the rainfly are adequately sealed and a few on the actual tent, the seam connecting the floor to the rest of the tent MUST BE SEALED!! I recommend using Seam Grip made by McNett (others more experienced than me have spoken of simply using silicone mixed with mineral spirits)…but the one thing I ignorantly failed to do was completely seal the vertical seams of the four corners–which led to a little water seeping in at the corners during heavy rain. If one seals the tent properly, however, the first time, the tent should keep all water out.”

“I bought this tent two years ago and it remains one of my favorite pieces of gear. I’ve taken it on two 6 day trips through the wind rivers in Wyoming. One six day trip through slot canyons in Southern Utah and several weekend trips all over Utah. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this tent, but here are some things that I have loved that have made my backpacking buddies jealous.

-Doors on both sides of the tent is a must for a two man tent.
-Vestibules are large enough to fit the gear of two backpackers.
-overhead storage space and hanging cup holders (perfect for your nalgene)
-Extremely sturdy when everything is staked in
-For clear warm weather you can ditch the fly and get the “under the stars view” without the bugs
-the foot print is light weight and a perfect fit.
-Two years and lots of use and not a single defect, no tares, no rips, not zipper failures
-I’ve used it in heavy rain with no leakage
-Extremely easy to pitch,(on one occasion I was caught in heavy rain before getting set up. I was able to throw myself and my gear and the rest of the tent under the fly. From that position I was easily able to set up the tent in the rain while keeping dry.

I’ve been extremely impressed with this tent. A good pad and sleeping bag should resolve any temperature complaints.”

“If you are really into high wind, hard core camping by yourself or with your very small spouse this is a good tent for you. We bought this for our 2 small kids (5 and 6 years old) so they could have their own space while camping at a campsite. The thing is tiny. TINY. Even my 5 year old couldn’t stand up in it. We put an airbed in it and it was absurd looking. You wouldn’t believe how small it is. We set it up in the living room, stood back and just looked at eachother. Now the kids didn’t mind and the tent is high quality for the price but if you need a little elbow room then pass on this one.”
