“I’ve been camping a few times in the past few months. This tent has been of great value:

* easy to assemble/dis-assemble – This tent is remarkably easy to assemble, it took a friend and myself about 15 minutes the first time. And I’ve had my share of tents that would refuae to stay up even after spending an hour on them. This is the most attractive feature of this tent for me.

* Quite sturdy and weather-proof too – The manufacturer has given nails which can be used to hold the tent down. I’ve run into rain twice with these tents, and not had a problem either time. There are mesh flaps on the side and at the top which let air in on a clear night, but they can be covered up to keep the rain out.

* It holds three adults and it has ample space for two.

I’d completely agree with one of the other reviewer’s remarks about the tiny bag that the tent comes in. It took us more than 20 mins just to squeeze the tent back into that small bag. But you could instead easily use the carton the tent in for holding the tent.

I would certainly recommend this for campers.”

“My husband and I researched before deciding on this tent. We are casual campers so we didn’t need to spend a lot of money. But we wanted enough space for an air mattress and all our gear without having to push everything up along the sides. And we wanted easy set up. This tent fits the bill very well. There is gobs of room for 2 people and all their stuff. At 5′ 1″, I am able to stand up in the center (hubby has to bend over a bit). We used it this weekend and it was perfect for our needs. We did read that it is important to seal the seams when getting a new tent because of the little holes created by the sewing needle. We did that as soon as we got it, but we had perfect weather this past weekend, so I still don’t know how well it will hold up in crappy weather. I have high hopes, however. We had no trouble at all setting it up and all in all, we are very pleased with our purchase.”

“This tent was pretty easy to put up, even for a little first timer like myself ( I am under 5 feet and was able to do it by myself, although it recommends 2 people). Definately use 2 people if they are available, simply for holding the rods steady as the tent goes up. It drizzled a bit on the camping trip, and the tent held up well with no extra sealant, and was tall enough for me to stand in. The privacy curtain came in handy while dressing or napping, since I shared my tent with 1 other person most of the trip. The number of people that fits in the tent is misleading, the tent says it fits 4-5 people, when what it really fits is 3 twin size air mattresses side by side, with about 1 or 2 inches on either side. If there are just sleeping bags, no air mattresses, it could probably fit about 4 people. The tent comes down just as easily as it goes up and fits nicely into the provided bag.

“Kelty makes great tents. They are well-made and go from box to fully setup in a matter of a few minutes. Very easy to set up!!!! We got this tent for two people and it works great with our queen airbed mattress. There is enough room for another person inside but not another mattress. The queen mattress touches 3 walls with a nice space left to store gear and clothing bags. We used it this past weekend and it was perfect. The tent is very lightweight and even though we were car-camping, it would be possible to carry this tent in a backpack.
Don’t get this tent if you have a family with kids, etc. Get a bigger tent, but I would recommend you get a Kelty! They are worth the extra $$.”

“I have camped all my life, and now that I do a fair amount of “car camping” with the kids, I look for a tent that sets up quickly (5 min), keeps you dry in rain (excellent design), won’t break the bank (good price), and reasonable size. This 9×9 foot print is ideal for 2-4 people with gear. Three wide sleeping bags with extra room on the sides and plenty at the head for your duffles (aka. pillows) and feet for clothing/gear). The company stands behind their product, and when used with a ground cloth (sheet of plastic works great), it will last years! I have one that is 10 years old and in very good shape. Only needed to replace the poles once due to fiberglass fatigue from use. Just bought another for the kids to use. “I bought this tent from a sporting goods store to take on an overnight camping trip. It was a last minute purchase because the tent I already had that I thought would be ok wasn’t. I didn’t even take this out of the box prior to setting it up it was so last minute. All in all, I have no complaints whatsoever with this tent. The poles are color coded-blue pole through the blue loops, green pole through the green loops, black pole for the rainfly. It went up in about 10 minutes with two people setting everything up. The inside was nice and roomy-four adults, a medium sized cooler and some backpacks fit comfortably. I am 5′4″ tall and could almost stand up straight inside. The windows (3) were nice and big as was the door. There is a hook in the top of the tent for hanging a flashlight or battery lantern. There are side pockets attached for putting things like watches, glasses, or wallets, as well as cup holders and such that can be attached if desired. I didn’t bother as we were attending a weekend-long wine festival-I figured we wouldn’t care too much about cupholders There was an attached welcome-mat type thing that you could leave your shoes on so no dirt would get inside the tent.

During our stay it poured not once, but 3 times, and not a drop came inside as we had attached the rainfly just in case. Like I said before, I hadn’t taken it out to set it up or anything, so there was no additional seam seal or waterproofing on the tent and we stayed perfectly dry. I read reviews of other Columbia tents and saw complaints that their poles snapped, but we had no problem and it was fairly windy when it rained. I didn’t care for the metal stakes that came with the tent. I had purchased additional stakes after hearing complaints about those as well but didn’t need to use them. The ground was pretty rocky underneath the grass, so the stakes were difficult to put in without a mallet, but they remained in the ground, and the package came with more than enough to hold down the tent. Get a mallet and you’ll have no issues.

I only spent about $100 on this tent, and it was worth every penny. I have other Columbia products (winter coat) and have had no problems dealing with their warranty department. They seem to stand behind their products, and if there was ever an issue with this tent I wouldn’t expect to have any troubles with them. An awesome little tent, I say!”

“this tent is really built! first time out we were in a 12-hour downpour–extremely heavy rain. absolutely no leaks, drippage, or any problem at all. everything was extremely well-sealed right out of the box. the ventilation system is also outstanding–4 very large windows, large ceiling vents and the lower vent in the door panel real helps the air flow! generally very easy to set up with 2 people. this is an outstanding tent–very well constructed, easy up and down, tight, waterproof, and practical. we use it for 2 people. 3 or 4 would be really pushing it, in term of interior space, but it’s very well suited for 2 adults plus gear. enjoy!”

“We had great weather all three days, so can’t rate its performance under the rain, but the tent was pretty big (it fit 3 adults, and one of us had a twin air mattress) and sturdy. All the pockets and storage shelves for our stuff was great and convenient (much bigger than I expected them to be from the pictures!) Having 4 windows made it really comfortable. Two of us assembled the tent in about 10-15 minutes.

The only thing I didn’t like is that it doesn’t have a “D” door, so you have to manage the bottom and side zippers separately instead of being one continuous thing, like most tents nowadays, making it more annoying getting in and out of the tent, but this details is not enough to offset all the other great qualities of it.

“This tent turned out to be just about perfect for car camping. It’s a little heavy, but it sets up very easily and is very roomy. We used it on a very rainy night and aside from a slightly damp floor, we stayed very dry.

My only complaint is that the instructions are pretty lousy. There’s no information at all on how to connect a footprint or how to use the gear sling. I spent a lot of time guessing and am still not sure I’m doing it right.”

“After sleeping in this tent for 5 weeks near the ocean (lots of fog/marine moisture at night), I can say it is waterproof with the rain fly (I also placed a tarp underneath it, as I wasn’t willing to test the waterproof floor hypothesis) and is relatively quiet in the wind. It never came unstaked, the rain fly never flew off, never ripped or tore, the door zipper never jammed (and I was in a sandy environment), and it was very easy to put up. The little ceiling storage pouch worked very well as well.

Personally, I’d recommend this tent for no more than 1 or 2 weeks use at a time. What I can say positively about is that it is very obviously well-constructed and I expect it to serve me on shorter trips for many years to come. Oh, and the lightweight tent stakes it comes with are very prone to bending in compacted soil or sand.”

“Let’s face it – buying a tent is like buying a house; unless you build it yourself, you are never going to get exactly what you want. That having been said, the Kelty Gunnison 4.1 4-person tent is pretty close to exactly what I wanted, and a great tent.

Packed up: The G-4.1 is at the large end of what you want for backpacking. Packed up, it measures approximately 8″x28″ and weighs about 8.5 pounds, so it’s going to take up a lot of room either in your pack or (more likely) strapped on the outside of your pack. But if you can hack it, that’s really a pretty light weight for a tent this size. On the otherhand, it’s a perfect size/wieght for car camping, if not on the small end of that spectrum.

Included in the package are (1) the tent; (2) two super lightweight aluminum poles; (3) rain fly; and (10) lightweight tent stakes with tie down lines.

Set up: This is where the G-4.1 is truly spectacular. When I got the tent, I quickly glanced at the directions for set up and decided to do a test run in my living room. If you want to do this too, make sure you have a BIG living room and lots of room to manuever the poles, cause they are REALLY long and I was constantly knocking over books and pictures. Anyway, I unrolled the tent and put it on the floor. I then put the poles together — each pole breaks down into several smaller segments that are permanently linked together so you can’t lose them. As you can see from the photos of this tent, the poles criss-cross at the apex of the tent, forming a big X from which the tent is suspended. Kelty uses a “clip” system in which the poles simply click into plastic brackets, rather than you having to thread them through anything. Each end of the pole is then fit into an anchor at the bottom corners of the tent. The rain fly was also extremly easy to put on, with the anchors for the poles also doubling as the anchors for the rain fly. The bottom line, folks, is that I think this tent took me all of about three minutes to set up. I was truly amazed at how easy it was. The best way I can describe it is that the G-4.1 is totally intuitive in the set up — you look at the parts and you can just see how they fit together. Really an awesome design job.

I just took this tent camping for the first time last weekend and set it up in very quickly fading light conditions. I had the whole thing set up and staked down — footprint, tent, rain fly — in a little over 10 minutes.

One thing I would recommend is that you grab six (6) little caribiners to attach the rain fly lines to the tent. They don’t come with clips and you have to tie them on otherwise. Also, make sure the fly is in as little contact with the tent as possible to prevent moisture buildup from condensation. If you have the fly on properly, this is not a problem because the design of the fly and tent take care of that for you. Also, get the foot print or a tarp for underneath.

Tent Features: The G-4.1 has a lot of really great features. First, it has a circular zip door on each side. This may not sound like a great innovation at first, but think back to your camping experiences and having to climb over people to get into the tent. Second, the G-4.1 is extremely well ventilated. There are large mesh sections of the walls, in the doors, on the top of the tent so that air flows freely through. Third, the G-4 has great visibility if you don’t need to have the fly on. The afore-mentioned mesh sections let you see the stars. Fourth, the floor design keeps the bottom seams off of the floor, which will keep you dry. Fifth, there are little “gear” bags on two sides of the tent, to stash your glasses or a flashlight. Sixth, there are clips on the ceiling from which one may hang extra gear bags and the tent comes with a “shelf” that you can tie up there — very handy for a light or for other stuff. Seventh, the rain fly creates dual vestibules in which your extra gear can be stored and, since you have two doors, both vestibules are easily accessible.

Tent Construction: Along with the “bathtub” seams, this tent is very well put together. Tape stiching at important junctures, double stiching all around, and a good, taut, solid feel to the tent. The floor material is good for soft ground, but I’d recommend the foot print just to be on the safe side. The fly fits on like a glove and provides for some ventilation as well. This is a solid tent, and once you get it set up (and assuming you put the stakes in the ground), it’s not going anywhere.

Size: I think we all know that “4-person” in tent-speak really means “4 people no larger than 5′8″ and 160 pounds, maximum.” The G-4.1 holds true to this convention. I’m 6′2″ and I barely fit in this tent the way people are suggested to lie in it (head to toe across the short side), and I don’t fit in with a sleeping bag. I had my wife (5′6″) and my 6-year old and 2-year old also get in the tent at the same time. Thinking to the future, the G-4.1 will be comfortable for three of us but too tight for all four of us. If we all four go camping, I’d bring a 2-man tent for the kids and keep all the gear in the G-4.1 with the adults. But if you have three or less people, this thing is spacious and feels that way.

“I got this tent when I was 17 years old. I am now 33. It has served me faithfully 17 years in 10 different states, including northern Maine. It’s sturdy, and setting it up is easy as pie after the first one. I put a little TLC into this tent every year by putting some seam sealer on it but that’s it. I am a big guy, (6 foot 1) and I treat this tent more like a really big two person tent. My two kids and I sleep in this tent with no problem! It fits a queen size airmattress no problem. Eureka is the king of customer service, and many accessories are available. While this tent may seem “plain jane” compared to other tents now available, it’s ease to take care of and quick set up make this a great first tent for new comers or a perfect tent for those getting back into the sport of tent camping.

“Like others here, I purchased my Timberline in 1976 when I was new to scouting and I’m still using it. I needed to replace the rainfly about 5 years ago after years of UV exposure and since Eureka still makes parts for this long-running model, it was easy to order. New tents have a factory-sealed rainfly and floor but you’ll need to treat the other exposed seams in the bottom corners and under the windows. This is standard tent care & maintenance and well worth the short time it takes to seal. Once I’ve done it…this tent is ready for another year of use. Hands down…one of the finest tent designs there is! I backpack year-round with my original 2-person and car or canoe camp with my newer 4-person version. Happy Trails to All!”
