“Kelty makes great tents. They are well-made and go from box to fully setup in a matter of a few minutes. Very easy to set up!!!! We got this tent for two people and it works great with our queen airbed mattress. There is enough room for another person inside but not another mattress. The queen mattress touches 3 walls with a nice space left to store gear and clothing bags. We used it this past weekend and it was perfect. The tent is very lightweight and even though we were car-camping, it would be possible to carry this tent in a backpack.
Don’t get this tent if you have a family with kids, etc. Get a bigger tent, but I would recommend you get a Kelty! They are worth the extra $$.”

“The tent is AWESOME!!! The poles are very durable and secure, the zipper is smooth, and it is very lightweight for its size. But I have not tried it in stormy weather. The only disappointment I had was the size. It fits 3 people quite nicely, but with 4 people, you need to have the people lay diagnolly. The floor size is actually about a foot smaller when setup. A portion of the floor is forced upward by the force of the poles. I would not reccomend this tent for any group over 3 people. This price is a steal when compared to REI prices!”

“Having now taken this tent out several times, and in plenty of rain, I’m very happy with the performance. The fly has good coverage and good seam-taping and I’ve never had a wetness problem other than some small amounts of condensation on cold mornings. I’ve used this in seasonable weather, from low 50’s to high 30’s and it’s performed well. The ventilation is decent even with the fly on and without much wind. It’s not easy to stargaze, but you can get a view if you position your head at the door. One great feature is the fly vent, which pops up and stays open thanks to a little hoop of wire in it. Hopefully it will not get mangled over time. The floor is a little thin (cut yourself a tarp groundcover) and I think abrasion could definitely be a problem. Those with dogs might want to be take extra care tht Fido’s nails don’t rip right through the floor. Condensation was slight overnight and only at the foot of the tent, not bad for the humidity in WI. Also the mesh kept the bugs out, which was very important.

It’s not the hugest–things would be tight with a second person, and taller folks might feel cramped in the length dept. However, the design does allow the tent to have a small footprint and yet seem ok for two people even if not super comfy. A good compromise for me, a camper who was wavering between 1 and 2 person tents. The vestibule isn’t big, but it’s better than many tents at a similar price point. There’s a loop in the ceiling for hanging gear, and a couple of gear pockets at the front of the tent. Aluminum poles are good, although I was not expecting them to be shock-corded.

Probably bulky and a tad heavy for serious backpackers. Easy (EASY!) to setup and take down, though I agree with another review that I’m in the dark on the guywire operation. I didn’t need ‘em anyway, though the shape of the tent (basically rectangular) leads me to think that high winds could be a problem. Stakes are ok, but surely will get replaced sooner or later.

With aluminum poles, a good fly, some vestibule space, good amounts of mesh, sealed seams, some gear pockets, and an ok brand name, this is a good tent for the money. Similar models at this price point tend to skimp on at least one of these features. If you want to spend less than 130 for a freestanding tent, this is a very good option.”

“I’ve had this tent for a few months. It’s light weight and compact. When put up, is very sturdy and sound. The tent goes up fast, simple and easy; take down is just as nice. It withstood rain with no problem. I’m 6′3 and have no problems with room while lying down. I haven’t had it very long but seems that it will last a long time. It can fit two people easily but not much room for gear inside with two. The only negative is that the vestibule is nice but not enough room for a lot of gear. Otherwise, excellent tent for a low price.”

“I bought this for use as a two person backpacking and car camping tent. I also bought a REI half dome two person tent to which I compared it. These are very similarly designed tents. I set up both tents (in my living room) and did a side-by-side comparison. I never actually used the tent and so can only speak to its design and not its actual performance. I ultimately returned the Kelty Gunnison 2.1 tent but it was a close call and I will explain the good & the not so bad below.

First, I feel that for the weight & price, it would be hard to find a more spacious tent. The Kelty Gunnison felt a little more spacious than the REI half dome which was no slouch in this category as well. This is consistent with the Kelty’s reported 3 more square feet (37 sq ft total) than the REI half dome. For people who are tall (over 6′–I am 6′2″) this is a very long tent at 92″. This is 2 inches longer than the rei half dome. Both tents are longer than many ultralight tents that I have sadly found to typically not be be designed with people over 6′ in mind. For instance, the REI QUARTER dome is a tight fit for any one over 6′. The Gunnison is also listed at a 40″ peak height which is fairly decent and I was able to sit upright in the tent comfortably. However, if you are 6′2″ or above, the extra inch of height in the REI half dome is just enough that you can get a little farther from the center of the tent & still be upright. This would be handy if you were sitting in the tent with someone at night or riding out a storm. Weight wise the Kelty gunnsion is listed as a few ounces less in weight than the REI half dome. The kelty is reported to have a package weight of 5 lbs 9 oz. I considered the weight difference to be insignificant. There are lighter weight options for two person tents, but they will not have as much space and will be more costly.

The vestibules for the Kelty are massive with each vestibule being listed at 12 sq ft for the kelty and 9 sq ft each for the REI half dome. I obviously did not stake out either tent in my house, but the kelty vestibules definitely seemed larger. These vestibules would leave plenty of room for backpacks and probably the proverbial kitchen sink as well.

Next I will address the design of the tent. The kelty uses a plastic, but reasonably sturdy appearing hub for the tent poles whereas the half dome uses a metal one. On the Kelty tent, the rainfly and tent body are connected to the tent poles using plastic Jake’s Foot connectors. On the half dome they are connected through the more traditional metal grommets. The entrance doors on both sides of the Kelty are smaller and more in the center of the tent than for the REI half dome. With the rainfly on, this made it slightly more difficult for easy entrance & exit with the Gunnison. This may theoretically also mean the Gunnsion would offer more protection from the rain getting in and out of the tent, but I obviously did not get to test this theory. I also am not aware of problems with the half dome in this regard. The overall tent body and rainfly of both tents seemed very similar in regards to material. The vents and netting also seemed reasonably comparable and I can only guess that ventilation in both tents would be reasonably similar.

For me, I ultimately chose the half dome over the gunnison but it was a tough call and I liked the gunnison’s design as well. My biggest issue with the tent was the plastic hub and the plastic Jake’s foot connectors. These are used in other tents as well. They may work great, but I personally prefer the metal hub and grommets of the half dome. I also liked the size and position of the doors much more in the half dome. The gunnsion was a little more spacious and had larger vestibules, but I felt this difference was not too dramatic.

In summary, I felt the Kelty Gunnsion 2.1 is a spacious tent with large vestibules at a decent price. It is a great option for tall individuals. I personally do not like the Jake’s foot connectors or the plastic hub as they do not appear very rugged. However, I do not have any evidence that this would ever be a problem in the field longterm. I would have preferred doors that were a little larger and less centered. However, this may not be as much of an issue for smaller individuals and may be advantageous in rain. My preference would also be for a lighter tent, but for the space and money I dont think you can find a better deal. If you were wanting a lighter two person tent that would also be good for taller people, I would check out the big agnes emerald series or the the big agnes copper spur series. However, the improved weight is offset by smaller space and higher price.”

“This tent turned out to be just about perfect for car camping. It’s a little heavy, but it sets up very easily and is very roomy. We used it on a very rainy night and aside from a slightly damp floor, we stayed very dry.

My only complaint is that the instructions are pretty lousy. There’s no information at all on how to connect a footprint or how to use the gear sling. I spent a lot of time guessing and am still not sure I’m doing it right.”

“After sleeping in this tent for 5 weeks near the ocean (lots of fog/marine moisture at night), I can say it is waterproof with the rain fly (I also placed a tarp underneath it, as I wasn’t willing to test the waterproof floor hypothesis) and is relatively quiet in the wind. It never came unstaked, the rain fly never flew off, never ripped or tore, the door zipper never jammed (and I was in a sandy environment), and it was very easy to put up. The little ceiling storage pouch worked very well as well.

Personally, I’d recommend this tent for no more than 1 or 2 weeks use at a time. What I can say positively about is that it is very obviously well-constructed and I expect it to serve me on shorter trips for many years to come. Oh, and the lightweight tent stakes it comes with are very prone to bending in compacted soil or sand.”

“Let’s face it – buying a tent is like buying a house; unless you build it yourself, you are never going to get exactly what you want. That having been said, the Kelty Gunnison 4.1 4-person tent is pretty close to exactly what I wanted, and a great tent.

Packed up: The G-4.1 is at the large end of what you want for backpacking. Packed up, it measures approximately 8″x28″ and weighs about 8.5 pounds, so it’s going to take up a lot of room either in your pack or (more likely) strapped on the outside of your pack. But if you can hack it, that’s really a pretty light weight for a tent this size. On the otherhand, it’s a perfect size/wieght for car camping, if not on the small end of that spectrum.

Included in the package are (1) the tent; (2) two super lightweight aluminum poles; (3) rain fly; and (10) lightweight tent stakes with tie down lines.

Set up: This is where the G-4.1 is truly spectacular. When I got the tent, I quickly glanced at the directions for set up and decided to do a test run in my living room. If you want to do this too, make sure you have a BIG living room and lots of room to manuever the poles, cause they are REALLY long and I was constantly knocking over books and pictures. Anyway, I unrolled the tent and put it on the floor. I then put the poles together — each pole breaks down into several smaller segments that are permanently linked together so you can’t lose them. As you can see from the photos of this tent, the poles criss-cross at the apex of the tent, forming a big X from which the tent is suspended. Kelty uses a “clip” system in which the poles simply click into plastic brackets, rather than you having to thread them through anything. Each end of the pole is then fit into an anchor at the bottom corners of the tent. The rain fly was also extremly easy to put on, with the anchors for the poles also doubling as the anchors for the rain fly. The bottom line, folks, is that I think this tent took me all of about three minutes to set up. I was truly amazed at how easy it was. The best way I can describe it is that the G-4.1 is totally intuitive in the set up — you look at the parts and you can just see how they fit together. Really an awesome design job.

I just took this tent camping for the first time last weekend and set it up in very quickly fading light conditions. I had the whole thing set up and staked down — footprint, tent, rain fly — in a little over 10 minutes.

One thing I would recommend is that you grab six (6) little caribiners to attach the rain fly lines to the tent. They don’t come with clips and you have to tie them on otherwise. Also, make sure the fly is in as little contact with the tent as possible to prevent moisture buildup from condensation. If you have the fly on properly, this is not a problem because the design of the fly and tent take care of that for you. Also, get the foot print or a tarp for underneath.

Tent Features: The G-4.1 has a lot of really great features. First, it has a circular zip door on each side. This may not sound like a great innovation at first, but think back to your camping experiences and having to climb over people to get into the tent. Second, the G-4.1 is extremely well ventilated. There are large mesh sections of the walls, in the doors, on the top of the tent so that air flows freely through. Third, the G-4 has great visibility if you don’t need to have the fly on. The afore-mentioned mesh sections let you see the stars. Fourth, the floor design keeps the bottom seams off of the floor, which will keep you dry. Fifth, there are little “gear” bags on two sides of the tent, to stash your glasses or a flashlight. Sixth, there are clips on the ceiling from which one may hang extra gear bags and the tent comes with a “shelf” that you can tie up there — very handy for a light or for other stuff. Seventh, the rain fly creates dual vestibules in which your extra gear can be stored and, since you have two doors, both vestibules are easily accessible.

Tent Construction: Along with the “bathtub” seams, this tent is very well put together. Tape stiching at important junctures, double stiching all around, and a good, taut, solid feel to the tent. The floor material is good for soft ground, but I’d recommend the foot print just to be on the safe side. The fly fits on like a glove and provides for some ventilation as well. This is a solid tent, and once you get it set up (and assuming you put the stakes in the ground), it’s not going anywhere.

Size: I think we all know that “4-person” in tent-speak really means “4 people no larger than 5′8″ and 160 pounds, maximum.” The G-4.1 holds true to this convention. I’m 6′2″ and I barely fit in this tent the way people are suggested to lie in it (head to toe across the short side), and I don’t fit in with a sleeping bag. I had my wife (5′6″) and my 6-year old and 2-year old also get in the tent at the same time. Thinking to the future, the G-4.1 will be comfortable for three of us but too tight for all four of us. If we all four go camping, I’d bring a 2-man tent for the kids and keep all the gear in the G-4.1 with the adults. But if you have three or less people, this thing is spacious and feels that way.

“We are a Boy Scout Troop that does a lot of backpacking and camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains of SC and NC. We have some older Kelty tents that have held up great through all of the abuse a group of teenage boys can put out, so we’re very pleased with the brand. The features of the Gunnison were the best in the price range. We’ve had them out a couple of times and are happy with the room, weight and design of the tents. Especially the 2 door design and the large vestibules. We’re expecting years of service from them. Will definitely buy again as we need more tents.”

“I got my gunnison a few weeks ago and have mixed emotions. I ended up getting the 3.1 for a little extra room and paid $199 on amazon with free shipping. As always with kelty, quality materials. However, the fastening mechanisms are all plastic and are specialty parts. I don’t know how a plastic bottle can survive 1000 years in a landfill but a plastic clip cannot survive more then a few years on a compression sac. New out of the box all the fasteners are great, the ends of the all aluminum poles have a ball that locks into the clip on the tent making set up much easier. But some day those things will break, and I won’t be able to stop at the local store and buy a new one (I have built/repaired LOTS of equipment from Jo Ann Fabrics). My other problem is the floor seems very thin and my other kelty footprints are the same material. I always worry about a puncture, so with this tent I use a $4.99 blue tarp (almost big enough) for a little bit of meat underneath. Hopefully my conserns are all for not and my tent will give me many years of pleasure. Thats really my only negative, the positives are many. Our first night it poured for about four hours and not a drop of water in our tent. The double door/vestibules are great, one side to enter and the other just big enough for two packs. The tent is relatively light, comes with aluminum poles, easy set up, plenty of room, looks good, everything I need at a reasonable price. I’m sure there are better tents, but this one is a great value.”

“I just returned from a 6-day/5-night camping trip and this is the tent I used. I did quite a bit of research before making my purchase and these were the requirements of what I was looking for in a tent:

1.) reasonably priced
2.) well made (duh–but you know what I’m talking about…something that doesn’t rival one of those CHEAP 30-dollar wannabe-tents from Target and other places)
3.) easily assembled by one person–and quickly
4.) small and light
5.) could manage under high winds and torrential downpours.

Well, after whittling down my list of possible tents, this is the one that remained. Here’s why I’m happy with my choice:

-At $100 (understandably, a steep price for some), for those that know that a cheap tent is nearly as bad as no tent at all, this was definitely a price that was reasonable.

-Many seams on the tent and rainfly had a pretty nice factory seal and the stitching seems tight and strong. The tent has excellent ventilation with much of the tent comprised of the fine, breathable mesh allowing air to easily come in and out.

-Excellent design for one man assembly. There are no annoying sleeves to slide the two press-fit poles through; they simply and sturdily attach to clips lining down to the four corners of the tent. I was able to set everything up within 5 minutes.

-While this can be used for two people, it would be cramped (31-sqft). It is perfect for one person and the extra gear (The previous reviewer’s comment on the paltry vestibule was spot-on). The tent barely weighs over 4 lbs. which is outstanding!! In fact, on my final day right before tear-down, when I picked up the entire assembled tent to carry to another spot so it could dry in the sunlight, I was amazed at how virtually weightless it seemed to be.

-Two of the days and nights were clear with lots of sun of stars. The others were filled with a windy lightning storm–a slow, long and perpetually annoying drizzle–and a few unrelenting downpours. The tent held up extremely well allowing only a small amount of water in at the corners…which was entirely my fault (See below).

I’m very pleased with this purchase. For the purposes of my trip, viz., solo, weeklong camping–where weight, quality, and price were the major concerns–if there is a better tent out there, its existence must have snuck past me. I’m planning an anniversary backpacking trip for next spring for me and the wife, so a new tent will be necessary (for which price will become less of a factor and where ultimate quality will be of paramount importance); however, for everything else involving just me, this will definitely be my tent of choice.

A few suggestions if purchasing the Teton 2. I would strongly advise purchasing the special Kelty Teton 2 footprint along with the tent. While $30 may seem like a very expensive accessory (maybe this is why the previous reviewer opted not to purchase it), it was a tremendous improvement on other materials I’ve used in the past under previous tents. It will protect your tent floor against minor damage as well as keeping it dry–and because it is specially made for this tent, it is extremely light (easily packs with the rest of the tent) and you never see it when the tent is set up (as opposed to using annoying and heavy tarps). Finally, a word on seam sealing. While all of the seams on the rainfly are adequately sealed and a few on the actual tent, the seam connecting the floor to the rest of the tent MUST BE SEALED!! I recommend using Seam Grip made by McNett (others more experienced than me have spoken of simply using silicone mixed with mineral spirits)…but the one thing I ignorantly failed to do was completely seal the vertical seams of the four corners–which led to a little water seeping in at the corners during heavy rain. If one seals the tent properly, however, the first time, the tent should keep all water out.”

“I have been extremely pleased with this tent. It is spacious enough for my family of four and is very easy to set up. My ten and seven-year olds can pitch this tent almost completely by themselves. Hooks for the poles is a vast improvement over running poles through slits. The connections for the rainflap are very easy to use. The inside is pretty spacious. The one loop for a lantern is good, but would have liked one or two more. The storage compartments inside are sufficient,and between them and the space created when you close the rain flap we had all our gear out of the elements. Given the size of the tent it is not overly heavy, although I could not fit this in my pack using the bag is comes in. Instead I connected it via some extra straps on my pack and it worked just fine. We have had no issues with any component of this tent and would recommend it to other campers.”

Even my 3 yr old son can help perform some of the tasks. Perfect amount of space for a family of 4 as long as the kids are still little. I wouldn’t want to put 4 adults in there, though. The tent worked great keeping out the rain in Alaska (and it rained a lot up there). I can’t comment on the air flow and comfort in warm climates, though.”

“If you are really into high wind, hard core camping by yourself or with your very small spouse this is a good tent for you. We bought this for our 2 small kids (5 and 6 years old) so they could have their own space while camping at a campsite. The thing is tiny. TINY. Even my 5 year old couldn’t stand up in it. “We bought this tent from Sportsman Warehouse because we had a short period of time before leaving for a motorcycle rally. We paid about $222 for the tent plus tax. Used this tent for a five night rally for 2 people and enjoyed the space it provided.

Positives:

You can stand up in the tent as soon as you enter it. With a queen size air mattress, it allows us to stand and change clothes. Many tents have their highest point in the center which means you have to step on or move your sleeping gear to use that space.

The vestibule gives us space for our riding gear and a place to sit on our Kermit chairs if it is raining.

While it didn’t rain, the tent fly does a great job of protecting the tent.

Very roomy for a four man tent. You could actually get a family of four in here!

Negatives

The entry door does have a solid closure – this means the top half of the door is screened but always see through. To change, you have to roll down the vestibule closures, or be quick!

This is a great warm weather tent but I think it would be very cold when the temps drop. No way to close up the front entry door, or seal off any of the vents in the rainfly.

The vestibule isn’t really bug proof, in heavy mosquito areas, there are plenty of places they can get in the screened in vestibule area.

My wife and I attend 4-5 motorcycle camping rallies every year and I think this tent will serve us well.”

“We are currently a family of 3. There was ample room in the tent. After spending two summer weekends in the tent we still love it. My husband has put it up and down by himself. He has not had difficulty getting it back into the bag. A few bugs find their way under the flaps into the vestibule, but it is still great for a place to leave shoes and put coolers overnight. We put a ground tarp down large enough to provide a floor for the vestibule. We had light rain both weekends and were quite pleased with the tent. The only two reasons I did not rate the tent a 5 are 1- the vestibule door is at such an angle that it is very tough to bend over to zip it all the way down (and in the middle of the night to zip in and out of two doors to go potty can be loud!). 2 – the rain fly goes all the way to the ground and we ended up undoing the back of it and rolling it up on 90 degree days to allow more air into the tent so we did not over heat everything. The tent would not have cooled down to sleeping temperatures during the day. I would not take this tent to a festival where we camped in open fields during mid-summer. Overall, we love the tent, the spaciousness (we will easily have a family of 4 in here), and the vestibule (a great place to strip down a toddler before entering the tent. (They are out of the mosquitos, but you can pick off the ticks before they go into the main tent.) This tent is a good fit for most weekend family campers. It is too heavy for backpacking, but we didn’t mind carrying it in to our primitive site two football fields away from the car.”
